Five Tips for At-Home Care of
People with Mild Cognitive Impairment/Dementia
Tip Number One: Post-It Notes
Around the house we use Post-It notes all the time. There is always a pen and stack of sticky notes on the table beside my grandmother's table. When she gets phone calls or people come to visit her, she writes down notes and leaves them on her table so she can share them with whomever they may concern later. This is great way to help jog her memory and allow her to make her own reminders.
Tip Two: Keep the Mind Moving
A great way to slow the progression of MCI and Dementia is to keep the mind fresh with things such as crossword puzzles, word jumbles, and word searches. These activities allow the brain to access information and keeps the mind fresh. If using this technique, make sure to ask those doing the puzzle/activity about it later.
Tip Three: Establish a Steady Routine
One thing that really helps people suffering from MCI and Dementia is establishing a steady routine with them. As these people tend to get confused, or nervous when new things, or changes in the schedule are introduced to them. In my experience, it's good to keep a steady and daily routine. If you are trying to introduce new things to the routine, make sure you move slowly and remind them of it. Don't rush anything upon them. Be patient!
Tip Four: Get them Outside and Moving
Exercise and being outdoors is a great way to keep the mind fresh. Make sure that the person is moving around and outdoors will help with physical health and help relax the person. If using this tactic, make sure not to let the person over do it, this could result in pain and confusion later.
Tip Five: ALWAYS HAVE PATIENCE
Patience is key when dealing with someone who has MCI or Dementia. You need to remember that every person had there good and bad days. You will have to repeat yourself sometimes and yes, it may get frustrating. But, it will eventually get better if you use some of these practices.
